GOTY Video: Left Behind

I'm not much of a fan of Gone Home. I can appreciate what that game did - a non-violent narrative exploration of a love affair between two young women - but as both a story and as a game, I thought it was lacking. The characters didn't feel real to me, and didn't garner much empathy.

I bring this up in talking about the spectacular add on to The Last of Us, because Left Behind tells a similar tale in a mostly non-violent way. Sure, the story of Ellie and her best friend Riley is interspersed with intense scenes showing Ellie scavenging for medical supplies in the main game's Winter section.

The story of these girls exploring a derelict shopping mall is the real highlight of the adventure, though. It's hard to talk about Left Behind without spoiling some of the best parts of the game. But what makes it so great is the way we see these girls being young girls for what may be the last time. They walk through a mall talking about gossip, taking pictures in a photo booth and even playing a video game at the arcade.

It's a look at Ellie before she became the hardened survivor we know by the end of The Last of Us and it's one of the best experiences I've had with a game this year. Enjoy the video.
